Alcon Laboratories recently announced the
approval of Opti-Free Express Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution as a "no
rub" regimen for cleaning and disinfecting contact lenses worn for 30 days
or less.
In a 30-day clinical study, Opti-Free Express
removed significantly more protein from lenses than the control multi-purpose
solution did with a rub.
The new product uses a proprietary
triple-action cleaning system (comprised of citrate, tetronic and AMP-95) as
well as a patented antimicrobial system (Aldox/ Poly- quad) for disinfection
capacity against common ocular pathogens such as Pseudo- monas and Acanthamoeba.
It also contains a proprietary buffer system so that lenses cleaned with it will
offer comfort for even the most sensitive eyes.
"Until Opti-Free Express Multi-Purpose
Disinfecting Solution, no company has demonstrated to the FDA's satisfaction
that its product should receive no rub labeling," said Kevin Buehler, vice
president, general manager, Consumer Products Division. "This has given us
the opportunity to raise the standard of lens care performance."
Alcon has also submitted a request to the FDA that Opti-Free Express be approved for usage with all soft contact lenses regardless of wearing schedule.
