Prio's nearpoint rod is retractable and telescopes to adjust the distance to the target.

Prio's Nearpoint Rod
Prio redesigned its nearpoint rod (NPR), adding new features that make testing at near and intermediate distances faster, easier and more ergonomic, according to the company. The new NPR addresses the doctor's common complaint of "getting in the way" by fitting on the phoropter and replacing the 26"-long, rigid model. Additionally, the NPR offers retractability, telescoping to adjust the working distance to the target, as well as a quick-release feature that allows one-handed installation or removal of the target.

The NPR is currently available to fit all standard phoropters with a 10-mm diamond cross-section reading rod. Prio says that adapters to fit other rod configurations will be available in 2003.

Prescription Protective Eye Wear
Titmus Optical introduces the EXTS Titanium, a new design in prescription protective eye wear. The frames feature a stainless steel concealed rim that attaches to a titanium chassis, a design that Titmus says differentiates it from all other protective eye wear currently on the market. The EXTS Titanium is available in two unisex frame styles and two color choices. The EXTS1 features a modified rectangular shape with a single-bridge design; the EXTS2 is an oval shape, also with a single-bridge design. Sizes range from 48 (21) -140 and 50 (21) -145. The frames are lightweight and meet the current and proposed ANSI Z87 standards for impact protection, as well as ISO endurance and bridge deformation tests for durability.

Santinelli's faster and more powerful lab edger

New and Improved Lab Edger
Santinelli International launched the LE-9000EX Express Lab Edger, a faster and more powerful version of the LE-9000. The device features a new high-speed motor and improved internal mechanisms that enable it to achieve perfectly finished lenses and greater bevel control. According to Santinelli, the LE-9000EX produces lenses with mirror-like finishes so that no additional buffing time is required. The company calls the LE-9000EX the more affordable "little brother" of its SE-9090 industrial edger, "ideal for bread-and-butter" edging jobs.

OptiSource's latest environmentally friendly lab chemical

An Environmentally Safe HTF
OptiSource International introduces a proprietary heat transfer fluid (HTF) that's so environmentally friendly it's safe to drink, the company says. The HTF is a clear, biodegradable and drain-safe solution. It's also odor free and contains no inhalation irritants, so that optical labs that previously didn't have the proper ventilation system for tinting can own and operate a dye unit. Additionally, the solution protects tint units' heating elements against deterioration.

OptiSource is offering a free box of hypo-allergenic disposable gloves and a siphon pump with any purchase of HTF through the end of January.
