CHECK FOR BLIND SPOTS
USE VISUAL FIELD TESTING TO DIAGNOSE EYE DISEASE AND BRAIN TRAUMA
THANKS TO perimetry, we can identify and assess the shape and size of scotomas, which are associated with eye diseases, such as glaucoma, and brain abnormalities.
Use these three criteria to choose a perimeter.
1 RELIABLE/REPEATABLE RESULTS
When monitoring visual field loss progression, you have to compare findings visit to visit, and the data must be interpreted by a physician if a patient referral is required. As visual field results and indices can differ from device to device, contact the physician to determine what device he uses.
2 EASE-OF-PATIENT USE
Some of the perimeter manufacturers have created short testing times and different stimuli so patients receive the appropriate amount of light in the correct lighting conditions to yield reliable results.
3 TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
Ensure you can network the device with your EHR, as this facilitates data gathering. OM

Orienting Statement
“This is called a visual field test. It provides a map of any part of your peripheral vision that is lacking. Peripheral vision problems are indicative of certain eye diseases and brain abnormalities. To take the test, look straight ahead, and push this button every time you see a flash. For data accuracy, it’s extremely important you look straight ahead. The test takes about 6 to 8 minutes per eye, with a break in the middle of testing. If at any time you need me to pause the test, please let me know. At the test’s completion, I will review the results with you.”
