DOCTORS RELATE THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH THIS MONTHLY CONTACT LENS
This “Focus” column presents the perspectives of several optometrists regarding their experiences with one new product.
A 28-YEAR-OLD female veterinary assistant, who spends most of her day on the computer, presented for her annual exam. She is a monthly silicone hydrogel contact lens-wearer and was adamant about staying in a monthly modality, explains Dr. Melanie Joyce Frogozo, O.D., of San Antonio. Keeping these factors in mind, Dr. Frogozo prescribed Biofinity Energys, from CooperVision.
OVERVIEW
Biofinity Energys is a monthly replacement lens. It features the company’s Digital Zone Optics lens design, which includes a front surface that has multiple aspheric curves. This distributes power evenly across the optic zone to allow easy focus change from on-screen to off-screen with less effort, according to CooperVision. Also, the lens is made with the company’s Aquaform Technology, which CooperVision says aids in the lens’ moisture retention.
FITTING AND CHAIR TIME
Both Drs. Frogozo and Jack McIntyre, of Corpus Christi, Texas, say integrating the lens was seamless, because they were already familiar with Biofinity monthly lenses.
Dr. McIntyre notes that aspects of the lens can appeal to different contact lens populations: For younger patients, ages 25 to 40, it’s the digital eye fatigue prevention. For older patients, ages 40 and older, it’s the high moisture content to combat eye dryness.
He says he found patients already wearing Biofinity lenses can easily transition to the Biofinity Energys because patients trust the brand.
Dr. Frogozo says she tries the lens on every patient who is a spherical.
“Because of the pervasiveness of digital devices, regardless of demographics, this lens helps patients with their normal lives,” she says.
Although Biofinity Energys was not designed for emerging presbyopes, Dr. Frogozo says she has had success fitting the lens on these patients regardless of their level of digital device usage.
“Older millennials and Gen Xers who are just entering presbyopia get a big wow factor from the [Biofinity] Energys lens,” Dr. Frogozo says, crediting the anti-digital eye fatigue technology.

PRACTICE BENEFITS
Dr. McIntyre lists comfortable modulus, high oxygen and water content as lens benefits and adds that offering new technology bolsters his practice’s brand.
According to Dr. Frogozo, since the multiple aspheric curves result in more positive power in the center of the lens, patients experience increased comfort without sacrificing distance vision. She adds the lens also easily fits on a range of corneal diameters.
Both doctors stock the lens, citing increased ROI and ease of dispensing as benefits.
THE PATIENT
The patient reported her appreciation for the lens, with noted comfort throughout the day, says Dr. Frogozo. OM
