  • Alcon recently debuted the in-office Lux MGD Treatment System at SECO International 2019 in New Orleans. Also, the company announced it teamed up with Microsoft and Elera Systems to create a new multifocal virtual reality training module for ECPs, residents and students.
  • The AOA Foundation’s Optometry Cares is now accepting applications for its Healthy Eyes Healthy Children community grants program, which will award up to $5,000 each for projects that spread awareness and increase vision care to underserved children across the country.   • The AOA’s 74th president, Donald E. Jarnagin, O.D., died on March 3 from cancer. Dr. Jarnagin was a founding father of the Great Western Council of Optometry and received numerous awards, including the Circle of Vision Distinguished Individual Philanthropist Award, from the Southern California College of Optometry. In the 1970s, he was a Captain and Optometry officer in the U.S. Army’s Medical Service Corps, from which he received an Army Commendation Medal.
  • A Brien Holden study, published in Molecular Vision, reveals two phases of eye growth, the first during pre-natal development, and the second during post-natal life. The study could have implications in the development of treatments for cataract and presbyopia.
  • Clariti 1 day multifocal lens power recommendations generated by CooperVision’s OptiExpert app closely matched eye care professional recommendations following the fitting guide at initial fit and follow-up, according to an independent study conducted by the Centre for Ocular Research & Education.
  • Essilor Vision Foundation donated 1 million pairs of glasses to people in need around the country since it began operating in 2007.
  • Heidelberg Engineering announced that its Spectralis imaging platform with OCT2 module has been successfully installed at the International Space Station.
  • IDOC added four members to its executive and management teams: Jill Johnson, vice president human resources; Jan Cory, senior director, strategic partnerships; Bridgette O’Brien, director of marketing; and Scott Robinson, director of strategic partnerships. Additionally, the alliance has launched the IDOC Employee Handbook Service and IDOC Insider for its members and has announced a multiyear partnership to offer neurolens prescription lenses to IDOC members.

  • Neuro Optometric Rehabilitation Association (NORA) and College of Optometrists in Vision Development issued a joint call-to-action urging health care professionals to consider the need for medical and/or functional optometric rehabilitation services for patients who have suffered a traumatic brain injury, such as a concussion, or a medical condition, such as stroke.   • PECAA has promoted Jamie Hughes, the former general manager of the alliance, as senior vice president.
  • Scott Filion has been promoted to CEO of Rev360, the company that provides a suite of eyecare practice advancement solutions, such as RevolutionEHR, to eye care professionals. Rev360’s founder and former CEO, Scott Jens, has been named a senior advisor to the Rev360 Board of Directors.
  • SECO International announced J. Max Ernst, O.D., as president. In related news, the group recognized: Optometrist of the South: Pete Smith, O.D.; Paraoptometric of the South Award: Melanie Jenkins, CPO; Young Optometrist of the South Award, Kayla Campbell, O.D.; Distinguished Service Award: Catherine Amos, O.D., F.A.A.O.; and President’s Award: Jerald Combs, O.D.

  • Transitions Optical’s “Employee Perceptions of Vision Benefits Survey” shows that eight in 10 reported vision-related symptoms at work, ranging from eye fatigue and headaches to dry eyes and blurred vision.
  • Common (Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr.), a Grammy award-winning hip-hop artist, a 2015 Academy Award and Golden Globe Award winner for his song “Glory” and an actor and film producer headlined Vision Expo’s first EYE2EYE series. The event, held March 22, featured Common discussing his background with storytelling, his fervor for creativity and topics and questions crowd-sourced from attendees prior to the gathering. The Chicago-born artist ended his talk by taking questions from attendees for roughly 15 minutes.
