Biologic therapy may appeal to patients looking for a holistic approach

Here, the author answers questions about dry eye drops, based on firsthand experience with it.

Please describe Regener-Eyes ophthalmic solution.

Regener-Eyes is a sterile, preservative-free biologic eye drop that comes in two versions, LITE (for mild ocular surface disease) and PRO (for moderate to severe ocular surface disease). Both the PRO and LITE have a shelf life of three years. The PRO version requires refrigeration, while LITE may be stored at room temperature.

What is it? How does it work?

This placenta-based drop has unique proteins, such as cytokines which provide anti-inflammatory properties, chemokines for healing properties, growth factors for regenerative potential and hyaluronic acid for high-level lubrication.

What patients may benefit from the drop?

In my practice, the patients who benefit include those who have ocular surface diseases, including blepharitis, dry eye disease, recurrent corneal erosions, keratitis and neurotrophic pain.

When would you introduce Regener-Eyes to the patient who has OSD?

We often introduce the drops to patients who have 1) keratitis, 2) are excessively dependent on lubricating eye drops, 3) failed prescription eye drops or are looking to discontinue them and 4) who have not fully responded to conventional home therapies or office-based treatments.

What adverse events have been reported?

No adverse reactions have been reported to the company. Regener-Eyes may be used with prescription eye drops as well as OTC eye drops. Although some patients may experience momentary burning upon installation, there are no long-term negative side effects.

What results can an O.D. expect?

Patients often feel improvements in symptoms, such as burning, stinging, itching, watering, foreign body sensation and light sensitivity within a few weeks to a few months.

How do you dispense the drops?

Our office carries the eye drops in-office for patient convenience. For travelling or out-of-town patients, Regener-Eyes is also able to deliver the prescription medication to patients directly.

Do you have a case study you’d like to share?

A 30-year-old male patient presented to our office with a SPEED score of 16. He reported using rewetting drops around the clock and minimal-to-no relief with a pharmaceutical eye drop. After performing in-office manual blepharo-exfoliation and initiating Regener-Eyes, our patient said he had instant relief and was able to taper to every 3 hours on his rewetting drops. At his one-month follow-up visit, the patient also willingly consented to thermal expression to unclog his glands. By addressing his dry eye’s root cause, we gave him an additional push in the right direction. OM
