EssilorLuxottica has announced a strategic partnership with the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) aimed at advancing global standards in ocular surface health through research, education, and clinical guidance. TFOS, a nonprofit organization focused on ocular surface science, has spent the past 2 decades supporting research, raising awareness of external eye diseases, and contributing to developments in diagnostics and treatment. The new collaboration is expected to expand those efforts through joint initiatives, including educational programs such as the TFOS Ambassador Program, which promotes awareness of ocular surface health worldwide.
As part of the partnership, EssilorLuxottica will support the development of a new evidence-based consensus report titled “Guidelines for Preparing the Ocular Surface for Eye Surgery.” The report will address perioperative care across a range of procedures, including cataract, refractive, glaucoma, retina, and oculoplastic surgeries. According to the announcement, the guidelines will be developed by an international panel of experts and are intended to help standardize clinical practices and improve patient outcomes. Ocular surface disease, particularly dry eye disease, has been increasingly recognized as a factor that can influence surgical outcomes by affecting preoperative measurements, postoperative recovery, and overall visual performance, according to a press release from EssilorLuxottica.
The partnership also builds on prior contributions from Espansione Group, which became part of EssilorLuxottica in 2025. Espansione Group participated in the recently released TFOS Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS) III Report, a widely referenced publication on the management of dry eye disease and ocular surface care. OM
