The National Academy of Opticianry (NAO) and the United Opticians Association (UOA) have announced in a press release that their fellow members and board of directors, respectively, have voted to authorize the beginning of a formal merger or asset-transfer process between the organizations. The vote follows a letter of intent that was approved by both boards in April and marks the next phase of due diligence and planning related to a potential consolidation. All current operations, member services, and educational programs—including the Ophthalmic Career Progression Program—will continue without interruption during this process, the NAO and UOA noted in the press release.
The Joint Steering Committee will continue evaluating several areas such as financial and legal obligations, programmatic integration opportunities, operational and staffing considerations, and continuity of member services and education during this period. “This process is designed to ensure that our future alignment is thoughtful, well-planned, and grounded in the best interests of our members and the communities we serve,” said Diane Drake, president of the NAO Board, in the press release.
The organizations said additional updates will be provided to members as the merger exploration process progresses.OM
