I am not sure I can narrow 7 years into one significant story because I feel that every month the editorial team brought some innovation or change to the attention of the OM readership. We were always trying to push the envelope, tackle controversial ideas, such as the standalone vision care plans debate, and provide a roadmap for OM readers to build their practices and improve the care they provided.
During my time as chief optometric editor, myself and the OM staff witnessed the release of the second Age-Related Eye Disease Study results, the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society’s Dry Eye Workshop II report, and the US Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the first ocular drug for diabetic retinopathy. All these events played roles in redefining optometrists as the primary medical eye care providers. Much of the content over these 7 years focused on clinical protocols, new procedures, and discussions on the ethical and practical considerations of new responsibilities, guiding optometrists through this transformative period. I think the release of “The Impact of Myopia and High Myopia” report, from the World Health Organization, in particular, reinforced the importance of optometrists as members of the healthcare team due to their expertise in refraction.
I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention the operational evolution that compelled optometry practice owners to adopt a more consumer-driven service model that included integrating retail-like strategies, such as online scheduling, mobile payments, and digital communication. OM contributors provided education on effective marketing strategies, optimizing merchandising for optical sales, and best practices for personnel management.
Further, the dramatic increase in private-equity acquisitions during this period prompted coverage on navigating these changes, offering guidance on business valuation, partnership models, and maintaining a competitive advantage in a consolidating market.
Thank you to the publishers, the editorial staff, and all our contributors during this time. Through the combined work of everyone, we made OM an indispensable resource for eyecare providers who wanted to provide exemplary patient care and employ best practices for practice management.
Happy 60th anniversary, OM!
