Richard S. Kattouf, O.D. , says at least 70% of his colleagues ask patients who call for appointments: "Is this examination for contact lenses or glasses?"
This approach reinforces patient notions that the only care they'll need is an exam for a contact lens or spectacle fit. It doesn't tell them that they need an eye health evaluation.
Dr. Kattouf says patients expect to undergo a quick contact lens exam and leave with a new prescription. This expectation is especially problematic with noncompliant patients who expect contact lens service on exam day. Often, this isn't possible because many such patients need corneal rehabilitation.
Many patients don't understand the importance of a comprehensive exam. Dr. Kattouf first performs a comprehensive eye exam. Then, if the patient wants contact lenses, he schedules a follow-up exam for a contact lens fitting. This method reinforces to patients that contact lens analysis is a specialty deserving not only a separate exam but also professional fees for the O.D.s skills.
