SoundAdvice brings the Internet to low vision patients.

For low vision web surfers
Telesensory recently released software that facilitates Internet access for the visually impaired. SoundAdvice obeys natural voice commands spoken into a wireless headset or desktop microphone to access e-mail, reads computer files and searches the Internet. It responds in a human voice with the data in seconds, the company says.

Additionally, SoundAdvice can find resources, special services and activities for the visually impaired. The device's information retrieval engine runs on Windows 2000 or XP and requires a personal computer with an 800 MHz processor and 256 MB RAM; the software comes on a CD.

New colors from Acuvue
Vistakon, a division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Inc., added three new opaque lens colors to its Acuvue 2 Colors contact lenses. Chestnut Brown, Sapphire Blue and Hazel Green all feature Acuvue's Colors-Wrapped-In-Comfort technology in which colors are layered inside the lens for a more authentic appearance and never touch the eye, providing greater comfort. The contact lenses have a thin-edge design and enhanced mid-peripheral zone that makes them easy to handle, the company says.

Enhanced Vision announced several improvements to Jordy, its headworn, portable, battery-operated device that allows low vision suffers to read, write, watch movies and television, and engage in hobbies. The Jordy's depth of focus is now one inch to infinity, allowing a user to bring material closer for easier reading on the go. Additionally, letter definition is enhanced, especially in high-contrast negative modes, and display colors are more lifelike.

The AL200 promises repeatable, objective measurements.

Lensometer made objective
Reichert Ophthalmic Instruments released the AL200 Auto Lensometer, designed to eliminate the subjective nature of lensometer readings, the company says. The AL200 measures all lenses, including single vision, multifocal, progressive addition lenses and lenses with prism. On-screen indicators guide users to optimal lens positioning.

The device features four measurement modes, a comprehensive review/conversion screen, multi-language capability and user-selectable Abbe settings. There's also a high-contrast LCD screen and icon-based operating system. An optional printer provides comprehensive printouts of measurement data.
