Lens for astigmatism

■ Air Optix for Astigmatism, from CIBA Vision, is a daily and extended-wear (up to six nights), monthly replacement silicone-hydrogel lens made of lotrafilcon B. It features a permanent biocompatible plasma surface treatment to resist deposits and maintain wettability, and the company's proprietary Precision Balance 8|4 design to provide a wide optic zone and axis orientation, the company says.

Other features: a Dk/t of 108 at -3.00D, a 8.7mm base curve, a 14.5mm diameter and parameters from plano to -6.00D in 0.25D steps, with cylinder powers of -0.75 and -1.25 and axes around-the-clock in 10° steps. Air Optix is available in a six-lens pack. Trial lenses are singles.

Two-week contact lens

■ Avaira, from CooperVision, is a daily wear, two-week replacement low modulus (0.5MPa) silicone-hydrogel lens manufactured from enfilcon A and features the company's patented Aquaform technology, which locks water into enfilcon A.

Other features: a Dk/t of 125, an 8.5mm base curve, a 14.2mm diameter, sphere powers from -0.25D to -6.00D, an ultra-violet ray blocker and an aberration-neutralizing system. Avaira is available in a six-lens pack or a three-lens trial carton.

■ Revolution EHR, from eye-code-rightonline, is a web-based electronic health record (EHR) information software program that assures data security, via encrypted connectivity, and data storage and back-up managed at a data center, the company says.

The software features patient-account management, practice-scheduling, staff-task management and clearing-house-connected electronic claims submission, among other features. You can access the online software via personal computer or Macintosh using any standard web browser, the company says.

Eyewear for driving

■ DriveWear, from Younger Optics, is a lens specifically designed for driving. The lens, which is a combination of Transitions photochromic technology and NuPolar polarization technology, is capable of sensing and reacting to various weather and light conditions both outside and behind the windshield, the company says.

The photochromics enhance and protect vision by responding to both visible and ultra-violet (UV) light (blocking 100%), while the polarization provides glare protection, the company says. The result: Patients are able to achieve optimum vision in overcast, daylight and bright-light conditions, Younger Optics says.

DriveWear is capable of sensing and reacting to various light conditions.

Therapeutic contact lens

■ Acuvue Oasys with Hydraclear Plus, from Vistakon, is now available in plano for therapeutic use as a bandage lens.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the lens' therapeutic use for lid and corneal abnormalities, corneal pain relief, piggy-back lens fitting, protection of the cornea from exposure or repeated irritation, as a barrier during the healing process of epithelial defects, such as a corneal ulcer, and for post-surgical conditions, such as lamellar grafts. It's available in a 8.4mm base curve, a 14mm diameter and a six-lens pack.
