| ■ The FDA has granted Carl Zeiss Meditec clearance for its Cirrus HD-OCT software version 6.0. The new software affords an Advanced Retinal Pigment Epithelium Analysis, which tracks change in RPE elevation area and volume often linked with drusen, the company says. Also, it identifies and measures the area of transparent regions in the RPE that can develop with geographic atrophy. In addition, the software includes an Enhanced Depth Imaging feature that enables enhanced visualization of deep tissues, such as the choroid, so you can better understand this anatomy's role in retinal disease. Further, version 6.0 includes Ganglion Cell Analysis and Optic Nerve Head Progression Analysis functions. ■ Citing declining readership and advertiser interest, as well as increased production and postage costs, the American Optometric Association has announced that it has ceased printing Optometry: The AOA journal, effective with the January issue. “It is our understanding that Elsevier will continue to host archived editions of the Journal at www.optometryjaoa.com as part of its commitment to subscribers,” says a letter from the AOA Board that was mailed with the January journal. Manuscripts now in review will be published online, linked from the AOA website's main page. ■ According to a recent longitudinal survey by VSP Vision Care, 72% of respondents in their third year in optometry school say they preferred to start their careers through private practice ownership, but only 15% of respondents became an independent practice owner in their first year of practice. In addition, 84% of the students say they expected to own a private practice in the next five years, yet during that same group's first year in practice, only 58% expected to own a private practice in the next five years. The Power Practice consulting firm (founded by Gary Gerber, O.D., who is also a columnist for OM) announced it has rebranded its paid newsletter Optometric Income as Power Practice. The Diplomates will be added to the listing of board-certified optometrists on the ABO website.
