Student Involvement at Academy Meetings
By Amy Lam, National Liaison of the Student Chapter of the AAO
The American Academy of Optometry (AAO) is a professional organization committed to promoting the art and science of vision care through lifelong learning. The field of optometry has expanded significantly over the past decade and these changes have transformed the way we treat and manage our patients. To keep up with the evolving healthcare atmosphere, optometrists must continuously update their knowledge base through continuing education. The annual Academy meeting offers nearly 300 hours of symposia, poster presentations and workshops spread over 4 days. It’s an excellent opportunity to accrue CE hours, but it’s more than just a conglomeration of academic lectures. The AAO has been making a huge effort to accommodate students at their annual meeting.
Student Fellowship Program
The AAO developed the Student Fellowship program to increase student involvement at Academy events. Student Fellowship is easily earned within one Academy meeting and requires attending a variety of talks and poster sessions in different optometric specialties. Earning Student Fellowship is a recognition that distinguishes a student as one who is willing to “go the extra mile.” It’s also a great way to get exposure to topics that don’t get as much classroom time and this exposure can open up new opportunities for you. Some may discover a newfound love for a specialty or may decide to pursue research or academia.
Networking
In addition to the Student Fellowship program, the Academy offers many networking opportunities. Each school has an alumni-networking event where students, faculty and practicing doctors come together. In addition, there are a variety of networking events sponsored by pharmaceutical companies. The Student Networking Luncheon is an especially beneficial event for those interested in pursuing residency. Residency directors around the country gather together in one location and talk to students on a one-on-one basis about their programs. It’s an excellent way to make that personal connection with a potential residency supervisor.
Exclusive Hall Time + R&R
There are many other events students can get involved in while at Academy. There’s an exhibition hall, similar to that at Vision EXPO and Optometry’s Meeting, and the Academy has been working to make this experience special for students. Starting with this year’s meeting, the exhibit hall will be closed to non-students for 1 hour, allowing company reps to tailor their focus to students without other distractions.
The Australian Party is an annual event that garners a consistently high turnout because both students and doctors look forward to it. After long days of attending lectures, the best way to unwind is to enjoy complimentary drinks with your friends, colleagues and professors and let loose on the dance floor!
Get Reinvigorated
Remember, academy meetings are student-friendly so I strongly encourage you to attend. The rigor of the optometric curriculum may leave students wondering what their hard work will amount to, but the balanced atmosphere of professionalism, education, and fun will reinvigorate the passion that drew you to the field in the first place. Hope to see you in Denver this November!! nOD
