A digital refraction and telehealth system coordinate in practice
The “Focus” column presents the author’s firsthand experiences with a new device, system or service.
As a kid, I watched “The Jetsons” (on reruns!) and marveled at the idea of flying to work, moving about my house on a conveyor belt, connecting all appliances to a central mainframe (computer) and having a beautiful wife.
In 2018, I can say I am a living embodiment of George Jetson! Today, our patients and staff demand a faster and more integrated life and optometric experience. This brings me to my newest “futuristic” advancement, the integration of Reichert’s Phoroptor VRx Digital Refraction System and DigitalOptometrics telehealth platform.
OVERVIEW
The Phoroptor VRx interacts with pre-screening equipment, such as my auto-refractor/keratometer, autolensometer and LCD-based acuity screens, including other manufacturer’s equipment. Moreover, the device has Bluetooth capability, making it adaptable to other pre-test equipment.
The device’s controller and display easily fit on the counter in my lane — with a footprint of 9.9 by 1.5 by 6.9 in., according to the website. This allows me the ability to face my patient as I simultaneously look at the controls and the Clear Chart 4P Polarized Digital Acuity System that I comfortably control with a touch of the VRx screen. (No more reaching up to turn the dials.) Additionally, the phoroptor has large buttons that are visible in lit or dim lanes and, more importantly, they allow this presbyope to clearly see what he is doing without his progressive lenses.
In addition to interacting with pre-screening devices, the refraction system also integrates with multiple EHR software (see http://bit.ly/2wcXLTm for a full list of compatible devices) and DigitalOptometrics.
DigitalOptometrics is the proprietor of eye care software that permits patients to undergo a comprehensive eye health exam remotely. How it works: Live remote video conferencing brings together the patient, optometrist and remote use of devices, like the Phoroptor VRx digital refraction system, according to its website.
PRACTICE BENEFITS
This technology, on the whole, allows us, as eye care providers, to increase efficiency and grow our businesses via the ability to see patients while not in the lane. Regarding the former, the integration with your EHR system reduces the time of transcribing and removes areas of potential error. In terms of the latter, say you have multiple offices, you can see patients physically in your first office, while seeing patients remotely in your other offices. Or, perhaps, you want to see more patients without hiring another O.D. All this technology equates to quicker exams and means more time to see more patients. (And what about working from home some days?)
MEET GEORGE JETSON
Patients expect a level of technology in our offices. That we can change the acuity line with a push of a button is a stunner. That we can perform a refraction or other binocular testing outside the physical lane is a jaw dropper. Comprehensive eye health exams, driven by optometry but conducted remotely — you read it right. Telemedicine has arrived. OM
