On the long list of tasks and obligations to accomplish each day, where does your own health rank? If you’re under the impression that personal wellness shouldn’t be an item on your professional to-do list, you’re making things harder to manage. This is because personal obligations are significant to the success of your business. Gallup shows that high well-being is a key factor in productivity, specifically: “Employees who have high engagement and high well-being [. . .] are 30% more likely not to miss any workdays [in any given month],” in addition to being “27% more likely to report ‘excellent’ performance in their own job at work.”
Use these tips to reclaim ownership of your health:
1 SET SMALL, ACHIEVABLE GOALS
Anticipating a struggle causes people to dread (and avoid) making changes. Instead, set easily obtainable objectives, such as committing to drink more water. Approach change with a positive mind-set for positive outcomes.
2 PLAN AHEAD
Plan ahead for busy work days by gathering everything you may need before heading to work, such as gym gear and healthy food options. Eliminating trips between tasks will help maximize your personal time and, hopefully, drive your motivation for daily exercise. In addition, meal prepping can set you up to choose nutritious items and eat correct portions.
3 CREATE GOOD HABITS
You crave what you eat, so, when given the option, opt for healthier menu items. Foods rich in fiber, protein and whole grains will leave you feeling fuller for longer periods of time. And when in doubt, look for colorful foods, such as green vegetables and vibrant fruits.
TURN AWAY FROM TEMPTATION
It may sound obvious, but when others gather around places like the break room or vending machines, unhealthy habits are inherently encouraged. These are hot zones for junk food and caffeine, which contradict your personal health. If you don’t think you can turn away from temptation, try taking a quick walk or nap during your break vs. going to hot zone areas. You’ll gain more energy from these natural solutions.
5 GATHER A TEAM
Invite staff members to join in your health and wellness goals! There’s strength in numbers, and you will benefit from having the support of people you see often.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
If you’re not taking care of yourself, it can be difficult to manage everything else. Empower yourself to regain ownership of your personal health and, thus, business success today. OM
