- The American Academy of Optometry Foundation and VSP Global announced the recipients of 2019’s Practice Excellence Scholarships. Scholarship recipients were selected based on their commitment to the practice of optometry and their clinical and academic performance. Nearly $200,000 was awarded.
- As we go to press, 1-800 Contacts has entered into an agreement to acquire 6over6 Vision (www.6over6.com ), which offers a variety of vision test technologies, including acquiring optical parameters from existing lenses and measuring pupillary distance. The 6over6 technology is used by several vision companies worldwide, with additional licensing deals expected.
- CooperVision was presented with a Global Impact Award by 360insights, the company’s rebates and incentive management partner, for the impact of the company’s consumer rebate donation program. The program, launched in 2012, enables consumers to designate all or part of their contact lens rebates to Optometry Giving Sight.
- ImprimisRx has announced that its FDA-registered 503B outsourcing facility received a non-resident operating license and has now begun shipping into California. This license allows California-based ophthalmologists, optometrists, surgery centers and hospitals to efficiently order and stock ImprimisRx’s more than 40 ophthalmic products for on-demand administration to their patients.
- Nominations for the 2020 National Optometry Hall of Fame are now being accepted, with inductees to be honored at Optometry’s Meeting 2020, June 24 to June 28, in National Harbor, Maryland/Washington, D.C. - The Neuro Optometric Rehabilitation Association (NORA) and PINK Concussions, a non-profit organization that focuses on pre-injury education and post-injury medical care for females who have brain injury, have developed the educational resource, “Women and Concussions,” which can be viewed and downloaded from both the NORA (www.noravisionrehab.org ) and PINK Concussions (www.PINKconcussions.org ) websites.
- Retina Rocks (www.retinarocks.org ) is an open-source retina teaching collection that includes 22,000 multimodal images and 3,700 annotated references organized by topic into a total of 360 sections.
- RightEye Vision System has received breakthrough device designation from the FDA as a device that uses objective eye movement measurements to aid in the assessment of Parkinson’s disease. This designation is designed to streamline the market clearance and approval process.
- Safilo Group has acquired a 70% stake in California-based Blenders Eyewear. Blenders’ founder and CEO, Chase Fisher, will retain ownership of 30% of shares and continue to run the company out of San Diego.
