Joanna Carter, O.D., F.C.O.V.D., of InSight Vision Therapy in Medford, Ore., says she had to do “something,” after wild fires ravaged neighboring towns the day school was to start.
“About 50% of my patients are children, so I thought organizing a school supply drive could help,” she explains. “I contacted a teacher friend in a school district hit hard, got a list of what supplies she felt would be needed, and my practice began promoting the drive on our Facebook and Instagram accounts, via signs throughout the office and personal texts to family and friends. About a week into the drive, our local news station contacted us, and then the local newspaper ran a story about it. We received either cash donations, or supplies, such as pens, pencils, paper and more.”
Dr. Carter adds that one of the largest donations she received was from Twin Forks Optometry & Vision Therapy, in Riverhead, N.Y.
“To have that kind of support from outside of our community was so special and appreciated,” she says. OM
