CASE IN POINT: I’ve had a few patients present with severe retinal hemorrhaging. In talking with their primary care physicians and other specialists, we think this may be linked to changes in the blood secondary to COVID-19. The ability to have this type of communication is incredibly important.
Forging collaborative relationships can be challenging for newer O.D.s. Outreach is nerve-wracking, especially if you’ve just come out of school. You’re talking to someone you don’t know, and you don’t want them to think you’re clueless. Everyone has been there. But when a problem arises, you need a list of specialists to whom you can refer.
THE LESSON: Start building a referral network — and communicate frequently. This is good patient care, and you get a feel for how well you work together and whether you want to continue that relationship. If your practice is established, you likely have built-in referrals you can start getting to know. If not, state medical associations are good resources for finding specialists to work with. OM
