As this month’s issue of Optometric Management includes a focus on glaucoma, here are an array of resources O.D.s can share with their patients and their patients’ caregivers:
- American Glaucoma Society (AGS). (americanglaucomasociet.net ). AGS features a patient portal that includes a doctor locator, resources, research and support, educational handouts, information about AGS Cares (a public service program that provides surgical glaucoma care at no cost to uninsured or underserved patients who qualify) and a glaucoma frequently asked questions section.
- BrightFocus Foundation (brightfocus.org ). This nonprofit organization funds scientific research globally to defeat Alzheimer’s disease, AMD and glaucoma and provides information regarding glaucoma, such as the importance of a healthy lifestyle; facts and data on the disease; tips, insights and expert advice to aid in disease management; publications for patients; a section on understanding clinical trials; the latest news; how to support research and more.
- Glaucomapatients.org (same website). Created by the World Glaucoma Association, the website provides basic information on the disease, such as how glaucoma damage occurs, what comprises an exam (“how is the optic nerve examined?’), how it is treated (including the correct way to instill eyedrops), and answers to frequently asked questions, such as “What can be done for blind or low vision patients?”
- Glaucoma Research Foundation (glaucoma.org ). This is a national non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for glaucoma that funds related research globally. It includes “What is Glaucoma?” “Care and Treatment” “Research Progress” “Get Involved” and “News” sections.
- GlaucomaUK (glaucoma.uk ). This website provides information on the disease itself; its diagnosis; treatments; related conditions, such as dry eye disease; a research hub; how to become involved in the organization; a news section; a personal stories portal and more.
- Keepyoursight.org . KYS is a non-profit foundation focused on helping everyone else keep their vision through active outreach, smart technology (check out “Vision Tests”), grassroots preventive care and more.
- World Glaucoma Patient Network (worldgpa.com ). This website enables visitors to find a support group near them; provides a section on how to start one’s own a support group and more. OM
