THE REASONS
Businesses across most sectors are dealing with staffing shortages. Optometry practices are dealing with this as well. At a time when it’s challenging to hire quality employees (or any employees), it’s critical to retain the staff you currently have. Below are a few strategies for averting an unexpected resignation letter.
ACTION STEPS
These strategies:
- Create a positive work environment: When people are asked what they like about their job, it’s not uncommon to hear, “I really like the people I work with!” Does this describe the vibe in your practice? If not, consider some non-work-related events that give employees a chance to bond. Work relationships play a major role in employee retention.
- Don’t overwhelm: When a business is short-staffed, the employees are often asked to take on additional tasks. Some of this may be inevitable for critical tasks, but make a list of tasks you could temporarily pause. High stress workplaces lead to attrition.
- Be supportive. In addition to too many tasks, it can be equally stressful to lack clear direction and training from an employer. Carve out time for training, answering questions and providing performance feedback. OM
