The ACUVUE Theravision with Ketofin daily disposable contact lenses, from Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, received FDA approval. The contact lens is indicated for the prevention of ocular itch, resulting from allergic conjunctivitis, and provides vision correction in those who don’t have red eyes, are suitable for contact lenses, and who don’t have more than 1.00 D of astigmatism, says the company.
“At my practice, located in the Central Valley of California, there are many allergy sufferers who can’t wear their contact lenses due to itching and irritation,” explains Vin T. Dang, OD. I think the Theravision contact lenses will allow us to provide a treatment option for these particular patients. Additionally, I think the lenses will drive patients into our offices.”
Dr. Dang adds that he believes this is the first of many other treatment options for ocular diseases.
“For example, imagine an atropine-eluting multifocal contact lens for myopia control?” he points out. “The future will be great for optometry and our patients, and this is just the beginning.”
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, a latanoprost-eluting contact lens designed to treat glaucoma and hypertension, and a timolol and dorzolamide-eluding contact lens are undergoing assessment. For additional information, see bit.ly/3KOSfHR . OM
