THE REASONS
Many practice owners have a lot of “blind spots” when it comes to their practices. These ODs often acknowledge they want to see patients but not have to worry about administrative tasks, such as billing, processing orders, accounts receivable, and on and on. While it’s true these tasks are typically delegated and not the most valuable use of a doctor’s time, the owner should still be knowledgeable of everyone’s responsibilities in the practice.
Here are a few pointers for asking the staff to train YOU:
IMPLEMENTATION
- Approach this in a non-threatening way. Employees can be territorial with their roles and reluctant to teach others what they do, fearing this may threaten their position. Reassure them the “why,” so you can better understand their role and any ways you can assist them.
- Ask employees to document the steps of various tasks. This can assist you in your understanding and also may become part of a training manual for future hires.
- If you cross-train, start a “lunch & learn” where staff members provide training during a paid lunch, with you in attendance. OM
