Corporate optometry continues to draw new and practicing ODs to the country’s optical chains. In fact, Walmart reports that “With over 3,000 vision centers nationwide, we have 11% of optometrists in the U.S. practicing in and adjacent to our stores.”
What initiatives do leading optical chains have underway for 2023? Here are a few examples.
SUMMER PROGRAM
Some, like one Walmart initiative, are designed to attract the next generation of optometrists to corporate settings. According to the company, “The…hands-on training program takes place during the summer between first and second year. It includes an OD mentor, is in-depth, and provides experience across a range of areas from basic visual services to diagnosis, management, and treatment of visual problems and ocular disease, contact lens fitting, patient education, and clinical business strategies.”
E-BOOK
Chain opticals communicate new opportunities in a variety of ways, including through e-books. To provide a look at what’s available, as well as to share real-life experiences of affiliated ODs, “The Complete Guide to EssilorLuxottica Branded Practice Opportunities: A Comprehensive eBook” was created for download. It details franchise, employed, and independent practice paths at the company’s Pearle Vision, Target Optical, and LensCrafters locations.
REMOTE CARE
At National Vision, there’s increased emphasis on remote care. Looking ahead, Alex Louw, senior vice president and chief medical officer, says, “We’re excited to continue expanding access to vision care. We’re aiming to start next year with remote care enabled in up to 300 locations.”
What else? “We’ll also continue to explore ways to enhance the experience of optometrists practicing in the National Vision Doctor of Optometry network,” adds Mr. Louw. That includes “investing in optometric education to support the next generation of optometrists, and developing options for optometrists who want to explore leadership opportunities in career paths beyond the exam lane.”
Mr. Louw explains, “This is all part of something much greater at National Vision. Over the next five years, NV intends to help five million people through our philanthropic efforts.”
THE CONNECTION
There are many reasons that corporate opportunities will continue to expand for optometrists. A very fundamental one was shared by Warby Parker Chief Financial Officer Steve Miller. As the company readied its public stock offering last year, he noted that just 35 locations then provided eye exams in-store. That number would be rising rapidly, he explained, because “70% of eyeglasses were purchased at the same place individuals receive an eye exam.” OM
