- Contact Lens Institute (CLI) launched a short-form video series to help the eye care community share healthy contact lens wear and care guidance with wearers. Called “Make It Easy,” each episode in the series features a 2022 CLI Visionary sharing examples of exam room conversations to promote important health and safety habits — in about a minute. - CooperVision announced an addition to its product portfolio: MyDay Energys daily disposable contact lenses. The lens is designed for providing comfort for wearers when they are using digital devices. The lens features a single vision aspheric lens design, which was initially introduced in the company’s Biofinity Energys. Further details regarding MyDay Energys, including available parameters and U.S. availability, will be announced in the coming months.
- CooperVision Specialty EyeCare is hosting a new series of workshops titled “Beyond the Limbus.” The dual-tracked series offers masters training for intermediate and advanced scleral lens fitters, as well as basics training for support staff and ECPs who have not been exposed to scleral contact lenses. The in-person workshops will be held on Sundays in October and November at different cities throughout North America. - FDA, in response to misuse of hydrogen peroxide-based contact lens care products (HPCPs), has developed draft guidance for manufacturers of HPCPs to consider when labeling their solutions. The draft guidance, entitled “Hydrogen Peroxide-Based Contact Lens Care Products: Consumer Labeling Recommendations - Premarket Notification (510(k)) Submissions” (fda.gov/media/160909/download ), provides labeling recommendations “intended to promote the safe and effective use of HPCPs.” Stakeholders can comment on the draft guidance until Oct. 17 on regulations.gov under docket no.FDA-2022-D-0986-0001.
- IDOC introduced a new member benefit, Managed Care Consulting. Overseen by Jenna Armitage, IDOC’s new managed care consultant, the service is designed to support ODs, as they navigate medical insurance issues and managed care plans. - Johnson & Johnson Vision launched its ACUVUE OASYS MAX 1-Day contact lens and ACUVUE OASYS MAX 1-Day MULTIFOCAL contact lens for presbyopia. Features of the lenses, which can be used at all distances, include TearStable Technology, designed to increase comfort by improving tear-film stability locking in moisture, and OptiBlue light filter, which can filter 60% of blue-violet light. The lenses also make use of PUPIL OPTIMIZED DESIGN TECHNOLOGY, which can tailor the lens parameters to variations across age and refraction.
- Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association recognized four award recipients at its annual conference in September. Derrick Tong, OD, FAAO, FCOVD, FNORA, received the Advancement of Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Award; Jamshid Ghajar, PhD, MD, received the Advancement of Sciences Award; Mary Van Hoy, OD, was honored with NORA’s Founding Father’s Award; and Marc Taub, OD, received the William and Diana Ludlam Educators Award.
- New England College of Optometry held its second Industry Collaborative on Aug. 29 and 30 in Boston. More than 100 attendees were hosted, with representatives from the eye care industry, health care, media, and academia. Topics discussed included rethinking refraction, the pace at which the industry is evolving, the legislative implications for the profession, the student experience, the importance of connection across industry partners, and the investment of industry partners in education and innovation.
- RevCycle Partners announced WeVerify, the company’s eligibility and verification service, now supports Crystal PM. WeVerify is designed to give practice staff an immediate picture of the benefits available for each patient two days before the visit for vision and medical payers. In addition, WeVerify enables the practice to collect up front the correct copay.
- TearLab announced it has changed its name to Trukera Medical. The company, known for manufacturing the TearLab Osmolarity System, said “the rebranding reflects the company’s vision and future growth strategy targeting a broader set of unmet needs across corneal health.”
- Treehouse Eyes, in conjunction with marketing agency Babbit Bodner, started a consumer PR campaign centered on spreading awareness of myopia management. The campaign, which began this summer and will run through October, focuses on educating consumers about myopia treatment options, and is planned to reach 15 cities across the country.
- Vyluma, Inc., completed its final patient visit for the primary analysis of its pivotal Phase 3 Childhood Atropine for Myopia Progression (CHAMP) clinical study, which seeks to evaluate whether NVK002 eye drops are safe and effective as a treatment for the progression of myopia in children. NVK002 is a proprietary, investigational, preservative-free eye drop administered nightly. Vyluma expects primary analysis readout later this year and regulatory submission in 2023.
