THE REASONS
In my observation working with hundreds of practice owners and office managers, there are two key components to being an effective leader – a healthy balance of assertiveness and humility. I believe many people in leadership positions lean into their title and display a high level of assertiveness. After all, you’re the one in charge! For this challenge, though, I want you to take a closer look at your level of humility.
Research has found that high team engagement requires an environment where leadership is open to other people’s ideas and creative solutions. This is an environment that fosters diversity of thought and genuine concern about the people on the team.
IMPLEMENTATION
I would suggest an anonymous survey where you ask your staff the questions below.
- Do my employees feel they can speak up on issues that affect the practice?
- Do my employees feel that I care about them as employees and people?
- Am I open to being wrong or being corrected?
- Am I supportive of employees who need additional training or assistance?
- Do I ask my staff for their ideas, opinions and concerns?
Use this feedback to make sure you’re properly balancing your assertiveness with your humility. OM
