THE REASONS
I’m an avid reader. When I tell people that, they often tell me they would like to read more but don’t have time. With a full-time job, travel, and two kids, I don’t really have time either. However, making that time can be beneficial.
Optometrists don’t get much training in marketing, business finance, leadership, and on and on. Even 15 minutes of reading a day can have a huge impact on our knowledge bank over time. The return on investment on that time can lead to better business decisions and fewer mistakes. You’ll probably even find yourself energized in the morning, as you show up to work with some fresh ideas.
IMPLEMENTATION
I’ve made reading part of my morning routine. Specifically, somewhere between making coffee and doing a little journaling, I read one chapter.
A few ways to work reading into your day is to get up 15 minutes earlier, or substitute reading for something that doesn’t add much value to your day, such as scrolling social media.
Below are a few of my favorite business books. I’d love to hear some of yours!

- The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable, by Patrick Lencioni
- The Science of Selling: Proven Strategies to Make Your Pitch, Influence Decisions, and Close the Deal, by David Hoffeld
