A continuation of our series that began with the April issue of Optometric Management (see bit.ly/OM2304inspire ), we invited optometrists to share shout-out moments of inspiration from their teams.
The handy man is in
Jeff Frizell, practice administrator at Bond-Wroten Eye Clinic, a three-location practice in southeast Louisiana, assisted patients, doctors, staff, and community members following storms that damaged property.
“After recent storms, he worked tirelessly to help clear debris and repair damage to our offices, as well as the homes of several employees and other community members, all while having to do the same to his own home,” writes Chris Wroten, OD, of Bond-Wroten Eye Clinic. “Every day, Jeff patiently listens to problems, proactively finds solutions, clearly communicates direction, and effectively leads by example. Seeing that example challenges me to be a better doctor and leader!”
Dr. Wroten added that Mr. Frizell was also elected to the local school board out of a desire to serve the area’s children.
Balance priorities
Cecelia Koetting, OD, looked to her staff members at her former clinic at Hines-Sight, Denver, Colo., as she sought to balance her life and work.
“For me, one of the most inspirational moments was actually a group of moments over many years,” says Dr. Koetting. “Two of my scribes, Matt and Virginia, who, among the rest of our staff, were shining examples of ceaselessly working hard through personal and family ups and downs. Working closely over many years with them has helped me to strive to find a better balance and to remember to stop occasionally and to reevaluate.”
Lead with confidence
Jesslin Quint, OD, co-owner of Smart Eye Care in Maine says she need look no further than her director of operations, Carrie Howe, to be inspired.
“Carrie is what [author and entrepreneur] Seth Godin would describe as a linchpin, someone who is extremely vital to an organization,” Dr. Quint says. “Her evolution from technician to office manager to optical manager to director of operations has created a strong and confident leader with a management and decision-making skill set that is impeccable. Despite the constant change the world of business often brings, Carrie is steadfast, adaptable, and growth-oriented. Every time I have a meeting with her, I leave feeling inspired by her drive, creative ideas, and positivity.”
Dr. Quint adds that one of her favorite parts of leadership is the vantage point of being able to see how employees grow and evolve.
