Contact lens decreases light scatter for improved VA.
The launch of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Vision’s Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day contact lenses and Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal contact lenses provide optometrists with the opportunity to prescribe a contact lens that filters 60% of blue-violet light — something they say patients have been actively seeking, given their increased usage of digital devices. In fact, adults are now spending 13+ hours a day on digital devices, a 35% increase since 2019, reports Johnson & Johnson Vision.
“I have had a lot of patients specifically ask me about blue light and up until now we’ve only had spectacle solutions,” says Ashley Roth, OD, of Eye Desire Eye Care, in Miami. “Many of our patients spend most of their day in front of a screen, so there is a lot of interest.”
Here, three doctors delve deeper into both the patient and practice benefits of offering these contact lenses.
PATIENT BENEFITS
According to J&J, Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day contain an OpitBlue light filter that reduces light scatter for improved visual clarity.
Denise Whittam, OD, of Cohen’s Fashion Optical, in New York, NY, who says she uses at least five to six different digital devices each day and started wearing the lenses to help alleviate some of the eyestrain she’s experienced, notes they have delivered:
“I have found that the blue-violet light filter in the lenses reduces scatter, halos, and other visual disturbances that I have experienced midday,” she shares. “While the multifocal is the best choice for aging eyes, I have also fit the spherical single-use lenses in children, teens, and adults.”
Dr. Roth, who says she’s been wearing the Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day lenses, has noticed enhanced comfort when wearing the lenses.
“The lenses are designed to lock in moisture for improved clarity and comfort with something called TearStable technology, which J&J says maximizes tear-film stability,” she explains.
Luis Rojas, OD, co-founder of DeNovo Eye, in McKinney, Texas, adds that he has had “nothing but positive feedback” from patients in whom he’s fit in the Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day lenses.
“Though not studied, I can also anecdotally say that my patients who say light triggers migraines for them have reported feeling that the glare reduction from these lenses are making a positive impact in this area,” he divulges.
PRACTICE BENEFITS
Dr. Whittam says that since fitting the lens at her practice, many patients have been referring friends and family members to try the lenses, something that has increased practice revenue.
Dr. Roth notes that offering the lens at her practice has re-emphasized to patients the fact that the practice stays abreast of the latest technology, so they can offer the most current solutions to patient problems.
“Our patients already know our practice as one that keeps up with what’s new, and this lens fits right in,” she explains.
