- Registration is open for the American Optometric Association’s annual meeting, held this year in Washington, D.C., from June 21 to 24. In other AOA news, the organization’s American Optometric Association Business Card has reimbursed AOA member cardholders over $143,000 in membership dues as a sign-up bonus, according to AOAExcel. The AOA Business Card is available to any business entity owned by an AOA member, regardless of that business’s affiliation with optometry.
- The Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry made two diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging resources available free for use by all in the profession interested in learning more about offering culturally competent patient care. They are “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging — A Virtual Cultural Competency Workshop” and “Cultural Competence in Eye and Vision Care: A Toolkit,” sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Vision. - Bausch + Lomb has acquired AcuFocus, manufacturer of small aperture IOL technology. One of AcuFocus’ latest products is the IC-8 Apthera, a small aperture non-toric extended depth of focus IOL which was approved by the FDA in June 2022 for use with cataract patients who have as much as 1.5 diopters of corneal astigmatism and wish to address presbyopia at the same time.
- The Clinical Algorithm for Myopia Progression (CAMP) study analyzed the results from 342 myopic children who were treated and followed over a three-year period at Treehouse Eyes. The most prescribed modality was orthokeratology, with 188 of 342 children initializing treatment. Euclid designs were prescribed to 84%. The findings indicate minimal axial elongation in 70% of patients and a reduction in the amount of myopic refractive error.
- Compulink Advantage Version 12 received the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC-Health IT) 2015 Edition Cures Update Health IT certification, which became effective in 2023. Specifically, this includes the latest interoperability standards needed to support compliance with the 21st Century Cures Act information-sharing requirements, according to Compulink.
- CooperVision is sponsoring Ocumetra’s mEYE Guide, a tool for eye care professionals to simplify the conversation with parents regarding myopia, and mEYE Gauge, an axial length estimator. This partnership will offer the tools in additional languages, such as Chinese, Italian, and Spanish, according to CooperVision. Ocumetra’s mEYE Guide and mEYE Gauge are available on a subscription basis. A free trial is available at cvi.ocumetra.com .
- CooperVision Specialty EyeCare launched Visavy, a web-based fitting software (https://marketing.coopervisionsec.com/visavy ) that incorporates topography-guided algorithms to aid in the design and choice of Paragon CRT orthokeratology contact lenses for myopia management. Additionally, the company is now the exclusive provider of ScanFitPRO, which maps topographical data from patients’ eyes to create custom scleral lens designs sans diagnostic lens fitting or physical impressions.
- Independent optometric alliance IDOC and Three Rivers Optical, an independent optical laboratory, have combined their companies. The two will continue operating in the marketplace under their existing names. The management teams of IDOC and Three Rivers Optical will continue as the leaders and owners in the combined company. Details of the merger are not disclosed.
- Ocuphire Pharma received a New Drug Application for Nyxol (phentolamine ophthalmic solution 0.75%) for the treatment of pharmacologically-induced mydriasis. The FDA assigned a Prescription Drug User Fee Act date of Sept. 28, 2023.
- Orasis Pharmaceuticals submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) to the FDA for its investigational CSF-1 (low dose pilocarpine hydrochloride 0.4%) for presbyopia. The NDA is based on data from the Phase 3 NEAR-1 and NEAR-2 clinical trials, which involved more than 600 patients and showed the efficacy and safety of CSF-1. Both trials met their primary and key secondary endpoints, revealing a statistically significant three-line or more gain in distance-corrected near visual acuity and no loss of one-line or more in distance visual acuity.
- Topcon obtained ISO 27001 certification of its browser-based Harmony RS Clinical Data Management System; this certification is in addition to the previous ISO certification the Harmony US system obtained. ISO 27001 is a standard for the establishment and certification of an information security management system (ISMS). The standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, operating, monitoring, reviewing, maintaining and improving a documented ISMS within the context of the organization’s overall business risks.
- Transitions Optical will host Transitions Certified–live events for eye care professionals to earn Transitions Specialist certification and gain access to educational materials on Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses. In the January/February 2023 issue of Optometric Management, a passage in the article “Orthokeratology: Overcome Parent Hesitancy” should have listed myopic macular degeneration as a possible complication of progressive myopia, instead of age-related macular degeneration. OM regrets the error.
