Remember that the past is the past and an incredible journey lies ahead
One day when you have time, just for the fun of it, consider spending a moment looking up the quotes, letters, and maybe even YouTube videos people have posted regarding the advice they would give their younger selves. No matter your age, I think you will find it interesting — and likely motivating — to see and hear what some of the folks who you respect have said.
Common themes
The advice I see most often follows these themes:
- Love yourself.
- Don’t be in a hurry.
- Work hard now, so you can enjoy the future.
- Let the past be in the past.
- Bring value to others.
- Don’t worry about making everyone else happy.
- Don’t worry about things out of your control.
- Live in the moment.
- Be confident.
- Learn to say “no.”
- Learn to say “yes.”
- Spend more time with family.
If I were in my 20s reading these, I might be confused by some of the advice. For example, which is it? Do I say “no,” or do I say “yes”? How do I not worry when I have bills to pay and deadlines looming? How do I not worry about making everyone else happy and still bring value to others?
Five lessons learned
Here is what I would tell my younger self (and I continue to remind my current self):
- Remember that life is a journey. On that journey, there will be good times and bad, happy and sad. Make the most of each moment.
- You cannot control everything; however, you can control your response to the unexpected. Be proactive, not reactive.
- The path you take in life doesn’t have to be the same as everyone else’s path. Forge your own way, always staying true to your purpose. You are allowed to be you. Innovation happens when we dare to follow our dreams.
- Always put others first and you will never be disappointed. My pyramid of life is God first, family second, friends, colleagues, and patients next, but never myself ahead of the rest.
- You will make mistakes; when you do, make it right with the person you wronged. Ask for forgiveness, then forgive yourself and move on.
Our journeys shape us
Thus far, my journey is different from anyone else’s I know. That isn’t good or bad — it is what it is. I wouldn’t be who I am without the moments I have had. I am grateful for all of those who have encouraged me along the way. As my journey continues, I pray I will be given more time with more people to be able to help them along their journey, so they can then help another.
An incredible journey
I realize more every day how much impact we can have on each other, so I would tell my younger self: Your choices do matter. Don’t be sad about the choices you could have made “better” — just remember the past is the past, and there are many more opportunities ahead. Seize the day and be ready to make your journey and the journey of those around you incredible. OM
