The Professional Delivers
Keeler's new ophthalmoscope provides comfort and precision.

Keeler's motto is, "The more you see, the better the diagnosis," and indeed that's what I found with the company's newest product. The Professional Ophthalmoscope definitely allowed me to see more than I could with my old ophthalmoscope. With the Professional, the view was clearer and had less reflections and shadows.

Getting down to particulars

The device even felt different from the start, with a handle featuring curved surfaces that fit snugly up to my eye. Furthermore, the Professional is designed with a soft brow rest that allows for easy positioning and protects your lenses if you're a spectacle wearer. Bright white halogen and xenon illumination made viewing easier for me while still being easy on the patients' eyes.

The Professional Ophthalmoscope has a red-free filter for enhanced vessel examination that you can use in conjunction with any of its six diagnostic beams. The wheel with which to dial in the prescription is easy to access and manipulate. It provides a wide range from +29 to 25 in single diopters, which gave me an easy examination of all the ocular structures. Additionally, the Lithiumion Mini Charger has a new design that connects easily to the base of the ophthalmoscope handle. A two-hour fast charge means your instrument is always ready for use. You can even use the Professional Ophthalmoscope while the instrument is charging.

Don't forget the aperatures

The Keeler Professional ophthalmoscope offers a lot of aperture options for viewing -- six, to be exact, which the company says puts it ahead of competitors.

• You can use the wide angle with a large beam for a large area and the slightly smaller beam when you encounter an excessive papillary reaction. That's useful for kids or for those patients who hate optometrists' bright lights.
• The macular aperture (or "small spot") was designed specifically for examining this region, so it reduces patient discomfort.
• You can use the slit aperature to diagnose retinal elevations or depressions.
• The eccentric fixation aperture allows the patient to use another part of his eye to view the circle at the centre of the aperture. The light reflex from the fovea will be seen outside the circle at the centre of the aperture. This will make it a lot easier for you to thoroughly evaluate the macula.
• The red-free aperture really allowed the blood vessels to stand out in detail.
• The cobalt blue aperture with fluorescein instilled similar to your slit lamp will give you a quick view of any abrasions.
• Last but not least, a glaucoma aperture allows you to assess the cup-to-disc ratio. Keeler says that the Professional is the only ophthalmoscope to offer this aperture.
