contact
lens management
Many
of the patients we fit with contact lenses when they were younger now either have,
or will have near point difficulties, and want to remain in contact lenses. They
want to maintain a youthful image, so they look to us for help in meeting their
vision requirements with contact lenses. This presents certain challenges for patients,
particularly for presbyopes with astigmatism, which becomes more problematic with
age. Always on the lookout
Since joining my practice in 1972, my associates and I have participated in the
investigational trials of many contact lenses and solutions. Because we are always
looking for new technologies to keep our presbyopic/astigmatic patients satisfied,
I was pleased to be included in a 20-practice trial lens study for the new CIBASOFT
Progressive Toric (CPT) lens in late 2004.
The
CIBASOFT Progressive Toric, or CPT
Get in on a growth industry According to industry
studies, in the United States, presbyopes with 0.75 diopters of cylinder or greater account for 30% of the entire
vision correction population. In fact, the presbyopic patient represents the largest
growing segment, with more than 100 million people over the age of 45. Among that
population, more than half are astigmats. Success from the start While there are
other quality toric bifocal lens manufacturers in the industry, my results with
them were fair at best, so I really enjoyed putting the CPT to the test.
To
my pleasant surprise, the first 13 patients that I fit with the specialty CPT lens
were success stories on the first try! When that happens, you become much more confident
in trying the lens with other patients. Since then, I've tried the CPT lenses on
more than 100 patients. We've had a success rate around 75% on the first try, and
about 80% with a second.
It's my go-to lens After several months,
I've found that the CIBASOFT Progressive Toric lens works extremely well with patients
who have low, as well as
high astigmatism, giving them better near and intermediate vision without compromising
distance. And my patients tell me that the quality of their vision is excellent
with this lens. I've also found
the simplicity of fitting this lens to be an added bonus. Though I am not a fan
of empirical fitting, the combination of factors, including the base curve radius,
overall diameter, thickness and lens material ensures a well centering lens. Those
of us who have worked with specialty multifocal lenses for some time know that no
single design will meet everyone's needs. However, in my practice, the CPT has been
a valuable addition as the lens of first choice to try on my astigmatic
presbyopes.
Keep
'em satisfied Like most optometric
practices, we have more competition than ever before. Many practitioners may subconsciously
believe that astigmatic presbyopes are uncommon. In reality, one of every two presbyopes
that walk into an optometry practice could benefit from an astigmatic component
in their correction.
I
find that many of my patients are open to discussions about specialty lenses that
meet their needs. When I find a lens that works as well as the CIBASOFT Progressive
Toric, it's a welcome addition to my practice and helps me keep my patients coming
back. References
