MPOD measurement

■ QuantifEYE, from ZeaVision LLC, is a device that measures Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD). The macular pigment is composed of lutein and zeaxanthin, with zeaxanthin outnumbering lutein in a 2:1 ratio in the very center of the macula.

QuantifEye provides definitive data on the state of the patient's macular pigment.

The test, in conjunction with a health and lifestyle history and fundus exam, provides you with definitive data on the state of the patient's macular pigment, so you can determine age-related macular degeneration (AMD) risk. The MPOD results range from .01 to .99 optical density with an estimated mid-range at .25 to .45. The lower the MPOD, the greater the risk for AMD.

Bilingual pocket card

■ The Bilingual Pocket Card, from Transitions Optical, is a 5.5 × 7.5-inch card that contains detailed descriptions of key lens features, such as progressive and high-index lenses, in English and Spanish, on its back. The front of the card contains a checklist of eyewear choices in three categories, in English and Spanish. The categories:

■ The CP-770 automatic chart projector, from Marco, features a light-emitting diode (LED) illumination system, which eliminates the need for light bulbs and provides you with a consistent, even illuminated image, the company says. Corneal topographer

■ The Piccolo Corneal Topographer, from EyeQuip, features autocapture, keratoconus detection, spherical-aberration measurement and standard maps, such as corneal wave front. Other features: repeatability check (the device compares multiple images for quality), free software updates and networking and the company's Wave Contact Lens Design Software, which obtains data from the topographer to create custom GP lenses.

The device is designed to mount on most slit lamps and connects to any Microsoft Windows computer that has Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0, the company says.
