Lubricant eye drop
■ Systane Balance Lubricant Eye Drops, from Alcon, is designed for patients who have meibomian gland disease-caused dry eye. Specifically, the eye drop restores the lipid layer and the natural tear film, to allow relief of dry eye symptoms, the company says. The drop contains HP Guar, borate, sorbitol, propylene gly col and the company's Lipi Tech System, which is an cumulsion technology of mineral oil and an anionic phospholipid.

Portable screening device
■ The MDD-2 Macular Degeneration Detection & Screening Device, from Health Research Sciences, LLC, is a portable instrument that provides reproducible measurements of macular function (precise photostress recovery times). This enables you to detect retinal pathologies, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic maculopathy, early, the company says. Further, the MDD-2 al-lows you to monitor central retinal health through time and can warn of function deterioration at an early stage, Health Research Sciences, LLC says. The test takes approximately four minutes, and the results are available immediately.

Contact Lens
■ Acuvue Advance Plus Brand Contact Lenses with Hydraclear Technology, from Vistakon, is a successor to Acuvue Advance Brand Contact Lenses, the company says. The daily wear, two-week modality silicone hydrogel lens is made of galyfilcon A. It features Ultra-Clean technology to help it resist deposits, and blocks more than 90% of UVA rays and 99% of UVB rays that reach the lens, the company says. Other attributes: a Dk/t of 62, a 8.3mm and 8.7mm base curve, 14.0 mm diameter and parameters of −0.50D to −6.00D and +0.50D to +6.00D in 0.25 increments, and from −6.50D to −12.00D and +6.50D to +8.00D in 0.50D increments. Acuvue Advance Plus Brand Contact Lenses with Hydraclear Technology are available in a six and 24-pack.

| • PreserVision Eye Vitamin AREDS 2 formula, from Bausch + Lomb, is now available in a smaller soft gel than the original with a b.i.d. dosing — two pills per dose, the company says. The original formulation was voluntarily recalled last July due to concerns regarding the pill's original size. • Transitions XTRActive lenses, from Transitions Optical, Inc, are now available in 1.50 Index and FT-28 bifocal designs. The lenses are for patients who spend a lot of time in bright, sunny conditions and are interested in wearing an everyday, adaptive lens that darkens outdoors and has a slight tint indoors, the company says. • Safigel has signed a distribution agreement with Optical Distributor Group (ODG) for its Safigel 1-Day daily disposable contact lens, which contains sodium hyaluronate. ODG will distribute the lens to eyecare practitioners (ECPs). In addition, ECPs can have ODG ship the lens directly to patients. |
