This month’s topic: how you or your staff can explain topography to patients.

“This test is called topography. It maps the curvature of the front part of your eye, known as the cornea. We use topography to look for any irregularities in your cornea. As contact lenses fit over your cornea, this technology is helpful in the fitting of contact lenses as well as in the evaluation of how contact lenses are fitting on your eyes.” |

Many doctors don’t take the time to explain to patients the purpose of the devices they use on them. This can result in patient anxiety and/or the internal question: “Was that really necessary?” By providing a brief and easy-to-understand explanation of topography and its benefit to the patient, his/her anxiety is quelled and the aforementioned internal question is never asked. In addition, the explanation creates patient appreciation, as you’ve taken the time to educate him/her and shown you genuinely care about his/her ocular wellbeing by using such a device. This translates to patient loyalty. |
