MULTIFOCAL CONTACT LENS OFFERS PRESBYOPES COMFORT AND CLEAR VISION
FOR PRESBYOPIC PATIENTS, two of the most common reasons for contact lens dropout are discomfort and poor vision correction. I have found that 1-DAY ACUVUE MOIST Brand MULTIFOCAL Contact Lenses, from Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., solve both issues.
OVERVIEW
The latest lens in the 1-DAY ACUVUE MOIST platform features the company’s MOIST material (Etafilcon A), which utilizes LACREON Technology. This technology allows moisture to stay in the lens throughout the day, and it does not blink away during the day. This provides all-day comfort to wearers.
In terms of vision correction, the lens utilizes INTUISIGHT Technology, which optimizes optical designs to address the natural variation in pupil size according to age and refractive power. Further, the new hybrid back surface design allows the lens to center well, and the aspheric optic zone enables the lens to better match and align with the curvature of the cornea in order to provide clear vision. Finally, the spherical periphery of the lens allows it to center well on the cornea and remain stable.
The 1-DAY ACUVUE MOIST MULTIFOCAL is available from +6.00D to -9.00D and provides three different add powers: low, medium and high.
FITTING AND CHAIR TIME
Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. offers a fitting guide, which helps to streamline the fitting process. In my experience, performing a new refraction and a sensory dominance test to determine the dominant eye are also keys to success. A new refraction is important as a 0.25 D change in this lens will make a big difference in the patient’s success. Also, the sensory dominance test is shown to work better than the sighting technique in determining eye dominance.
Based on the lens’ attributes, my practice developed a list of patients whom we felt would have success with this lens. Ideal candidates included patients who were already in the daily modality as well as those who were motivated to discontinue the use of reading spectacles over their contact lenses.

PRACTICE BENEFITS
In the short time we’ve offered this lens, we’ve had great results. In fact, within the first two weeks of carrying the lens, we fit about 40 patients. With the design of the lens and the easy-to-use fitting guide, we’ve realized a 95% success rate with the first or second pair of diagnostic lenses.
What’s more, the patients who have success in the lens have shared their excitement with friends and family, which has led to many referrals and increased interest in both the lens and our practice. OM
