■ “Comprehensive Eye Exams: Vital But Underutilized Preventative Healthcare Tools” is a report published by AOA, Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, The National Council on Aging (NCA), The National Eye Institute and LensCrafters, to help change perceptions of comprehensive eye exams around the country. ■ AAO announced its new Academy Career Development Award to encourage optometric research at a younger age. Awardees will be announced at the 2016 Academy meeting Awards Ceremony. For more, visit aapot.org.
■ Optometry Cares is accepting nominations for its new Dr. W. David Sullins Jr. InfantSEE Award. Candidates are those who go above and beyond to serve pediatric patients. ■ Alcon, which partnered with Verily, the life sciences team within GoogleX, to create a glucose-sensing contact lens for diabetes patients, announced it is also working on developing a smart contact lens and a smart IOL for patients who have presbyopia. Both lenses would provide accommodative vision correction. ■ Alden Optical received ISO 13485 certification, an international designation indicating the implementation of a quality management system for the design and manufacture of medical devices. ■ Myolite Inc. has received a patent for Electromagnetic Radiation Refractive Therapy. It is the second patent of its kind to teach this therapy and “describe how specific light sources with emission in the visible spectrum can be placed in spectacle lenses, contact lenses and spectacle frames,” according to the company. The patent was issued to Jerry A. Legerton, O.D.
