CREATE OMEGA-3 COMPLIANCE
USE THESE TWO SCRIPTS TO OVERCOME PATIENT PUSHBACK
MARK HINTON
IMAGINE this: A patient presents complaining of ocular dryness. Upon reviewing her dry eye disease questionnaire, the patient’s answers to follow-up questions and performing a DED assessment, you prescribe a clear-cut omega-3 supplement.
Your tech says to the patient:
“Sally, Dr. Eyewise has prescribed a specific omega-3 treatment for your dry eye disease and wants you back in six weeks, so she can assess your signs and symptoms. I’m going to provide you with a sample supply, so you can feel confident that it is gentle on your system.”
Some patients may pushback on supplementation. Here are two common objections and what your techs should say to overcome them. OM
OBJECTION 1: “I ALREADY TAKE AN OMEGA-3 SUPPLEMENT.”
“Sally, all omega-3 supplements aren’t the same, and you haven’t felt the relief you should with the one you’ve been using, so Dr. Eyewise is prescribing one that other patients have benefited from. Some omega-3 supplements are far superior in quality than others — quality and processing in fish oil is everything! If trying this treatment provides you with relief through the next six weeks, would it be worth giving it a try?”
(If the patient replies, “no thank you,” have the tech give him or her a “label diagram” sheet and product-dosing card and say, “Please check the label on the product you use to see how many capsules are needed to get the same amount as the one Dr. Eyewise is prescribing.“)
OBJECTION 2: “THESE ARE EXPENSIVE!”
“Sally, on occasion other patients have expressed this, as well; and they’ve found they take fewer of these to gain the necessary healthy levels of omega-3 vs. the lesser formula store brand; let’s take a snapshot of the quality label, and you compare the levels to your brand level; then you can come back and start using these.”
