Diagnostic technology can create a “practice of distinction.” Here’s how
While the diagnostic technology landscape continues to evolve, a fundamental question about technology remains unchanged: Will a new piece of diagnostic equipment raise the level of patient care in a practice? When the answer is “yes” and a purchase is made, the practice owner/manager must consider a number of issues, among them, how the practice will communicate the value of the new device to the patient.
Past “Viewpoint” columns have discussed how those practices that communicate technology in a way patients can easily grasp are practices that help facilitate patient buy-in to the plan of care, which is critical in today’s health care environment.
Practices that use the “right” words when explaining new technology can reap additional benefits, as Optometric Management’s chief optometric editor, April Jasper, O.D., explains in “Introducing Automated Refraction” (p.22). For example, by adopting an automated refraction system and using the “right” words to explain it to patients, a practice can create the perception of a “practice of distinction,” one to which patients will want to return each year. That’s a win for us all.
A FITTING INTRODUCTION
This month’s OM, with a theme of “diagnostic technology,” is a fitting issue in which to introduce Dr. Jasper as OM’s new chief optometric editor: Dr. Jasper authored OM’s “Technology” column in 2013 and 2014. Whether columns or features, Dr. Jasper has brought both analytical thinking and practical advice to her contributions — a cornerstone of our mission at OM.
In addition to her approach to content, Dr. Jasper brings to the position a wealth of experience as a resident, adjunct professor, lease-holder in Walmart and, for the past 16 years, owner of the private practice, Advanced Eyecare Specialists, in West Palm Beach, Fla. She has also served as president of the Florida Optometric Association.
I invite you to read Dr. Jasper’s “O.D. to O.D.” column, on p.1, for insights into her practice philosophy and a glimpse of what you can expect in future issues of OM. Without giving too much of a spoiler, it’s a bright future! OM
