March 1-31: WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
#WomensHistory #WomensHistoryMonth
Especially for those women-owned, female-led businesses, choose a couple days in the month to highlight them. The Library of Congress, Smithsonian and others recognize this day, RT what they have or use the website (womenshistorymonth.gov ) to grab eye care-specific content to highlight, such as the first females to hold the presidency for AAO or AOA, from OM’s eye care timeline in the 50th anniversary edition: bit.ly/OMTimeline .
March 5-6: NATIONAL DAY OF UNPLUGGING
#NationalDayOfUnplugging
Unplugging, or not using your devices, is a great way to highlight issues of digital eye strain and the impact of blue light with increased device usage.
March 19: WORLD SLEEP DAY
#WorldSleepDay
The link between sleep and glaucoma has been discussed in a few studies, including the one referenced in this AOA article, bit.ly/3pKmVA1 . Consider bringing this to light with a tweet. (Download the graphic to go with it!)
Observances
SAVE YOUR VISION MONTH. The AOA encourages optometrists to use the month of March to increase the messaging to patients about the importance of eye health and comprehensive eye exams.
The AOA provides downloadable infographics, templated press releases and patient education materials on its website to help execute this mission. You can find them at bit.ly/3oG4VWb .
You can continue this messaging on the social media holiday, March 23, American Diabetes Association Alert Day. The AOA offers this graphic with a series of facts about how doctors of optometry can aid in early detection of the eye-related ramifications of diabetes.
Additional observances for March include Brain Injury Awareness Month and National Nutrition Month. (See p.14) The Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association can be an excellent resource for the former (download graphics at bit.ly/NORAdownload ), and Prevent Blindness for the latter (a download page is available for this organization at preventblindness.org/infographics-archive ).
Check out the download folder (see above) for this page for a selection of graphics from these organizations and others.
