What an exciting time in eye care. Our patients, friends and colleagues continue to gain knowledge about eye health, but are we missing anything? In our training, we learned about eye diseases, vision, diagnosis and treatment of all things eye-related, but we may not think about how the cosmetic market impacts eye care.
One important consideration in this discussion is the effect of social media. Trends in eye cosmetics and even eye health often come from influencers who, most of the time, have no training in or knowledge of ocular health.1 How does the cosmetic market influence patients? Trends:
- Mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow dominate the eye cosmetic market as the most commonly used products.1
- 90% of adult women younger than 55 years old use face and eye cosmetics.1
- The global eye makeup market was valued at US$15.5 billion in 2020, and market experts expect continued growth.1
- Artificial intelligence is predicted to become an eye makeup advisor that can analyze images and offer personal recommendations.1
TFOS has even expressed interest in cosmetics in their new reports, perhaps in part because patients are motivated to use products that improve their appearance and confidence rather than prioritize products that are good for them. In upcoming issues of this newsletter, we will report on the eye cosmetic products reviewed in the TFOS reports (such as eyelash growth products, eyelash cleansing products, creams and more), significant findings and steps forward to address product ingredient concerns. You will see data on more than 60 ingredients—including preservatives—in ocular cosmetics that can lead to ocular surface disease. We will explore the signs and symptoms to look for during eye exams and review what we should listen for in discussions with patients about their habits.
Don’t miss our experts’ upcoming issues as they reveal challenges in cosmetics and eye health and offer suggestions for effective discussions with patients. It’s time to be proactive in our conversations with patients regarding the products and ingredients they use before possible adverse events cause lasting negative effects.
