Undercoding an exam is equally as wrong as overcoding and has a huge effect on the bottom line of a practice. This was one of the messages Scott Moscow, OD, stressed during his 2025 SECO presentation, "Billing and coding Bootcamp.” The lecture occurred on Sunday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Georgia World Congress Center, Room 312.
Specifically, his course taught a systematic way to select the appropriate 92XXX code (Ophthalmological Services) or 99XXX code (Evaluation & Management) using a cheat sheet (below) to bring back to your office, so the attendee can implement these skills immediately.

Diagnostic Tests, Procedures, and Modifiers
In addition to the coding cheat sheet, Dr. Moscow discussed which diagnostic tests and procedures are not only appropriate for each diagnosis, but also the standard of care. He also went over which diagnostic tests can be billed together at a particular visit and when it is appropriate to use a modifier to get paid for both an examination as well as a procedure.
“Pop Quiz, Hotshot”
Dr. Moscow posed real clinical scenarios from his own clinic to attendees who, thanks to love polling software, were able to text him how they should code example cases. OM
