Why should optometrists consider onboarding the Optovue Solix FullRange optical coherence tomographer (OCT), from Visionix? The answer is that the device, “provides detailed images and data on the anterior segment to the posterior segment and everything in between,” says Nate Lighthizer, OD, FAAO, dean at the Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Specifically, the Optovue Solix FullRange OCT provides anterior 18 x 6.25 scans, posterior high-density scan patterns for greater detail, integrated cameras, and the company’s proprietary software. The latter includes AngioVue, which enables noninvasive 3D visualization and quantification of retinal vasculature, and iWellness and AngioWellness, which can show whether deeper imaging is needed, making diagnosis efficient, according to the company.
Here, Dr. Lighthizer, as well as Mile Brujic, OD, FAAO, of Premier Vision Group, in Bowling Green, Ohio, and Julie Rodman, OD, MS, FAAO, chief of the Broward Eye Care Institute and professor of optometry at the Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry, both in Florida, discuss their favorite features.

Multiple Scans
Dr. Lighthizer says he appreciates the device’s ability to acquire pachymetry and scans of the macula and optic nerve.
“The Optovue Solix FullRange OCT aids me in identifying disease states early in both the anterior and posterior segment,” he explains. “In doing so, I can determine a management plan that will set the patient up for success, be it for refractive surgery or preserving their vision.”
Angiography Capability
The level of detail in the device’s OCT-angiography functionality enables optometrists to identify vascular drop out, points out Dr. Brujic.
“This is particularly useful in identifying early blood vessel changes in patients who have diabetes, glaucoma, and unexplained changes in visual acuity,” he notes. “As an example, the foveal avascular zone increases in size over time in patients who have diabetes. The angiography feature demonstrates some of this capillary drop out in areas that are most susceptible to these changes.”
Anterior Imaging
Dr. Rodman says her favorite feature of the Optovue Solix FullRange OCT is its ability to aid her in monitoring dry eye disease via meibography and in identifying keratoconus via topography. “The topographer has also streamlined proper scleral contact lens fits and in identifying corneal irregularities pre- and post-cataract surgery,” she adds.
