Optometrists now have a new online educational resource that they can offer to their patients to help them better understand their vision and eyecare benefits. The new guide, “Understanding Insurance Benefits for Eye Care,” breaks down insurance terms, coverage types, and benefits related to eye exams, glasses and contact lenses, medical eye care, and surgery, according to a press release from Prevent Blindness, who created the guide.
The resource also offers links to information on vision care financial assistance programs, opportunities to engage in eyecare advocacy, and a platform for sharing personal vision stories, according to Prevent Blindness.
Prevent Blindness says it encourages everyone, including care partners, to carefully review health and vision benefits, understand what’s covered under their medical and/or vision plans, and schedule regular, comprehensive eye exams.
"Understanding Insurance Benefits for Eye Care" comes on the heels of the opening of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace (HealthCare.gov), which runs November 1, 2025-January 15, 2026. (Medicare open enrollment is also underway until December 7, 2025). OM
