The 2-part research report "Focused inSights 2025: Myopia Management," from The Vision Council, in part, reveals 3 stumbling blocks to treatment for the progressive condition: cost, (86%) parental understanding (56%), and patient compliance (49%). The findings come from a survey of 293 optometrists, managers, and practice owners. (See Optometric Management's September issue article, What’s the Big Deal About Myopia? for action steps to overcome these challenges.)
Other highlights from the report:
-
A total of 91% of providers recommend myopia screenings at least once a year.
-
About 7 in 10 providers report offering myopia management for children in their practice.
-
Providers cite slowing progression of myopia (78%), reducing complication risks (78%), and improving long-term eye health (71%) as the primary reasons for offering treatment.
-
Providers overwhelmingly identify excessive screen time (82%), genetics (82%), and limited outdoor activity (77%) as key drivers of myopia.
