At the 2025 Optometric Management Symposium, William H. Stephen, OD, discussed, in part, product innovations and digital tools in his presentation titled “Today’s Contact Lenses: Trends and Takeaways.”
Product Innovations
Dr. Stephen talked about multifocal toric daily disposable contact lenses—once unavailable in combination—that are now meeting the vision needs of astigmatic presbyopes.
Additionally, he discussed eco-conscious developments, including biodegradable packaging, brand-led recycling programs, and bio-based materials designed to appeal to younger patients.
Also, Dr. Stephen noted that thanks to advances in contact lens materials, patients who have ocular surface disease can achieve comfortable wear. Specifically, he cited reductions in mechanical irritation and surface protection, even for compromised eyes.
Further, he highlighted that orthokeratology is now a tool for more than just pediatric myopia management, as it can be ideal for adults who have low myopia and are seeking a nonsurgical, daytime lens-free intervention.
Digital Tools
Emerging diagnostic technologies are making fitting more precise, Dr. Stephen continued. Online calculators now streamline lens selection, while corneal topographers containing simulation features help predict lens behavior. Additionally, ocular surface imaging is aiding in decisions regarding contact lens fits for patients who have dry eye and those who need specialty fits. Dr. Stephen pointed out that staff play a critical role in this process, as they are, "often the ones capturing images” using these digital tools.
“Use the right material for the right patient, don’t be afraid to try specialty fits, and make diagnostic mastery a team effort,” Dr. Stephen concluded. OM
